The filmmaker, who also helmed the last project in the franchise, said Sony Pictures will be creating a third installment of the popular movie format which they hope to begin filming in 2019.“The idea is to make the movie in the beginning of the year if we can get it all worked out. Part of the challenge of figuring out how (the emotional centre of the film) continues is to keep that alive in ways that feel earned… Like a true kind of continuation in this story,” Kasdan told Collider.

Matt Damon is in talks to play the late billionaire Marc Rich in the biopic King of Oil. Universal is developing the movie alongside John Krasinski’s Sunday Night Productions. Universal optioned the rights to Daniel Ammann’s 2009 biography The King of Oil: The Secret Lives of Marc Rich for Krasinski’s company and now the hope is that they can sway Damon to star in the movie adaptation, lending it some major credibility and star power.John Krasinski won’t be directing, but given how well A Quiet Place did at the box office and with critics this year, having his name attached to The King of Oil already helps boost its profile. Couple that with a bankable star in the form of Matt Damon and a compelling real-life story and this has the makings of a potential hit written all over it. For those who aren’t familiar with Marc Rich and why someone might want to make a movie about him, here’s a synopsis for Daniel Ammann’s biography.
“Billionaire oil trader Marc Rich for the first time talks at length about his private life (including his expensive divorce from wife Denise); his invention of the spot oil market, which made his fortune and changed the world economy; his lucrative and unpublicized dealings with Ayatollah Khomeini’s Iran, Fidel Castro’s Cuba, war-ravaged Angola, and apartheid South Africa; his quiet cooperation with the Israeli and U.S. governments (even after he was indicted for tax fraud by Rudy Giuliani) and near-comical attempts by U.S. officials to kidnap him illegally. This sure-to-make-headlines book is the first no-holds-barred biography of Rich, who was famously pardoned by Bill Clinton, and resurfaced in the news during the confirmation hearings of Attorney General Eric Holder. The King of Oil sheds stunning new light on one of the most controversial international businessmen of all time.”
That gives the creative team a lot to work with. This won’t be the first time that Matt Damon and John Krasinski have worked with one another, assuming the deal gets done. They both worked on Gus Van Sant’s Promised Land, which they wrote together and starred in. Both Damon and Krasinski were also part of the producing team behind the Academy Award-winning Manchester by the Sea. Damon was originally supposed to play the lead in that movie, but ultimately the part went to Casey Affleck, who would go on to win a Best Actor Oscar for his work. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have been tapped with adapting the book into a screenplay. As of right now, there is no word on who may be tapped to direct. Allyson Seeger, Vincent Sieber and Uri Singer are on board the producing team, with Mark Sourian overseeing the project for Universal. There is no word on a production timeline forThe King of Oil at the present time but it sounds like this is in the relatively early stages.
The Rock has debuted some awesome vintage-style posters for his upcoming movie Skyscraper. The wrestler-turned-actor has not been shy in declaring that this particular blockbuster, though not based on anything specific, was directly inspired by a couple of classic action thrillers; 1988’s Die Hard and 1974’s The Towering Inferno. In order to pay homage to those movies, Dwayne Johnson has debuted a pair of new posters that directly channel those classics.
Taking to social media, Dwayne Johnson shared the pair of posters, just ahead of the debut of the final trailer for Skyscraper. According to his caption, it sounds like these posters were actually his idea and he’s not shy about declaring his love and respect for Bruce Willis, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Here’s what he had to say about the posters.
“I had these ultra cool vintage posters made paying homage to the two classic movies that inspired me and generations, and became the inspiration for my film Skyscraper. Respect & luv to the GOAT’s Willis, McQueen & Newman #DieHard #ToweringInferno #Skyscraper”
In a follow-up tweet The Rock added, “Bruce was a big influence on me.” The posters themselves work as excellent homages to their respective movies. The one channeling Die Hard looks very much like the theatrical poster for the action classic that helped make Bruce Willis a movie star. The one inspired by The Towering Inferno looks like it was ripped straight from the 70s. At the present time, it isn’t clear if these posters are just going to be making the rounds online or if they’re actually going to be displayed to help market Skyscraper. If this movie is as good as it looks like it could be fans may want to get their hands on one, or both, of these for themselves.
Skyscraper reunites Dwayne Johnson with Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the screenplay in addition to directing. The pair have already lined up their next project, Red Notice, which will star Gal Gadot and is slated for 2020. In addition to Johnson, the Skyscraper cast includes Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Roland Moller, Pablo Schreiber, Byron Mann, Hannah Quinlivan, Noah Taylor, Jason Day, Byron Lawson, and Elfina Luk. Critics have yet to weigh in, but the trailers have delivered on the action and this could serve as the perfect break for those who are looking for something a little more fresh.
This summer has been a good one for the box office, but it’s relied heavily on sequels and the usual superhero offerings, as is common these days. But Skyscraper is one of the only blockbusters arriving this summer that isn’t based on anything recognizable. It’s a big, original action flick that is banking on a major movie star in the form of Dwayne Johnson. Much like the movies that inspired it, Skyscraper feels old school in that way. Let’s hope it lives up when it arrives in theaters on July 13. You can check out the new posters, courtesy of The Rock’s Twitter account, for yourself below.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has revealed that he thinks it would be “wonderful” if Black Panther or other Marvel movies earned recognition at the Academy Awards. Black Panther stands as one of the most successful movies of 2018, with incredibly impressive critic reviews, so the possibility of it receiving some Oscar love isn’t entirely out of the question.
Outside of a few exceptions, typically superhero movies only receive any attention at the Academy Awards in the Visual Effects category. However, the recent rise in the superhero genre in the industry may be starting to change that. At the Oscars earlier this year, Logan earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, making itself the first superhero movie to ever receive that nomination. The tides are changing at the Academy in order to become more open minded. Perhaps including superhero movies could be part of the change. In an interview with Vox, producer Kevin Feige was asked if he thought Black Panther would receive any attention at th oscars, and if he was even planning on campaigning it for the Academy Awards. Here is what Feige had to say.
“I think there are a lot of amazing artists that helped to make that movie, and it would be wonderful if they could be recognized. Almost everyone involved in that movie, bringing that movie together, is great, and it would be wonderful to see if they’re recognized. We’ll see. This genre, typically not. And I think it would be a wonderful thing for Panther and for our production designer Hannah [Beachler], and our costume designer Ruth [Carter], and for Ryan [Coogler] who co-wrote the script with Joe Robert Cole, and of course directed the movie. And Michael B. Jordan, and Chadwick [Boseman] and Lupita [Nyong’o] and Letitia [Wright]. There’s amazing performances, amazing artistry in that. I’d love to see them recognized, and I’d love to see this genre recognized. Yes, they’re visual effects, yes, they are fun explosions, yes, there are spaceships. But these are all hand-crafted. Maybe it’s in front of a computer; it’s often actual sets, actual hand-built costumes. As much passion and artistry and talent goes into every single one we do; it’d be amazing for them to be recognized.”
While Feige’s thoughts are optimistic, they are also realistic. Though it is true that it would be “wonderful” to see Black Panther earn a number of nominations, specifically nominations it would undoubtedly deserve like Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director, given the Academy’s history, it may not earn much more than Visual Effects. Like most other superhero movies, Black Panther’s award recognition will most likely come from other Award shows, like the Saturn Awards MTV Movie Awards. Black Panther was truly one of the best movies of the year so far, bringing up worldly viewpoints that most other movies never bring to the table. As Kevin Feige said in his interview with Vox, there were a number of people involved with Black Panther that received recognition. Hopefully Black Panther’s name will pop up more than once when the next Oscar nominations list is officially released early next year.
